2012 AUSTIN REGIONAL GOLDEN GLOVES TOURNAMENT
The Austin Regional Golden Gloves returns to Austin for its 3rd consecutive year. This year’s tournament promises to be the most competitive and exciting since the tournament’s return in 2010. Golden Gloves has a long and storied sports history not only for Austin but also for the entire nation. Golden Gloves saw its birth in 1923 when Chicago Tribune “Sports Editor” Arch Ward organized a city wide amateur boxing tournament. The goal of the tournament was to showcase the best in amateur boxing while raising money for charity. The champions of the tournament were awarded a miniature golden glove, which gave the tournament its name. Since its inception, Golden Gloves has been an annual national sporting event which provides youth with a chance to participate in amateur boxing competition. Texas received its Golden Gloves franchise in 1937 with Austin receiving its sub-franchise in the early 1940’s. Sadly, Austin lost its franchise in 1984 but regained it in 2010.
The 2012 Austin Regional Golden Gloves Tournament is scheduled for February 1st – February 3rd at the Travis County Expo Center Banquet Hall (7311 Decker Lane). Doors open at 6:00 pm and the first bell is at 7:00 pm each night. Boxers (female and male) from 16 to 34 years of age will be competing. Open division champions will then proceed to the Texas Golden Gloves tournament in Ft. Worth, Texas (February 29th – March 3rd, 2012). Official weigh-ins for the tournament are scheduled for February 1st (beginning at 8:00 am) at The Fit Pit Boxing and Fitness Academy (2401 Thornton Rd.) Media is invited to attend. Tournament Director for this event will once again be Coach Art Cardenas. Coach Cardenas recently retired from the Travis County Sheriff’s Office as a Captain with over 26 years of service. He is the franchise holder for the Austin Regional Golden Gloves and the owner/operator of The Fit Pit Boxing and Fitness Academy. He is available anytime for interviews. This event is sanctioned by the South Texas Amateur Boxing Association and USA Boxing. All proceeds will be donated to charity. Beneficiaries for this year’s event will be Meals on Wheels & More of Austin and the Travis County Sheriff’s Law Enforcement Association Youth Scholarship Fund.
